Further east is the lower Birkenhead River, which is the ideal family paddle. Last summer there were twenty-eight us, half of which were kids age 10 and under. There was an abundance of salmon, eagles and occasionally even bears. My daughter was gifted with seeing a wild horse bathing under a willow tree; the smile in her face I will never forget. The river twists through native land; pay your respects and you’ll be rewarded one of the most peaceful paddles on the planet. The grand finale of Birken, the Green and the Lillooet is Lillooet Lake—another view that will leave you breathless, uplifted and grinning. The camping is delightful on the sandbar at the confluence where the river flow into the Lillooet. Alternatively, paddle another half hour down the lake to Strawberry Point and set up shop under the stars.
