AQUA MARINA BEAST 10’6 TEST REVIEW

Verdict

Aqua Marina’s Beast is a comfortable, refined all-rounder. It’s a full-bodied creation at 300 litres but well conformed and weighs just 8.7 kg thanks to the double-walled dropstitch core construction. This smart board will get you on the water most days of the year and would be a great partner for fitness runs and general touring.

Overview

Initially out of the box I was impressed. Everything you need to get going right away in a pack that would fit into the boot of a Mini Cooper. After unrolling the SUP I set my stopwatch and got pumping. The Beast inflated to the recommended 15 bar in 6 minutes. I think this is perfectly reasonable for a 300 litre board.

The paddle is easily assembled and extended, and the fin slots t in with a simple, corrosion free, plastic lug to stop it from sliding out. No tools, no messing around. Leash on and away we go.

Brand Claim

Designed for use across a wide range of conditions, by all kinds of riders. The shorter models are better suited to catch some waves, while the longer wider models are aimed at heavier paddlers or families who will be paddling together on one board.

The Drop Stitch Light Technology makes the new Aqua Marina all-around advanced line the most valuable inflatable SUP on the market with an incredible stiffness and weight ratio.

Performance

My first outing was a very relaxed trip around a local river. The SUP dealt well with tidal flow and when navigating some very shallow tributaries.

The second trip I was feeling more energetic. Heading out of Falmouth I rode the last of the incoming tide up the Carrick roads and into a significant headwind around Mylor. I did have to dig in but managed to keep a reasonably straight course and all my preconceptions about an inflatable in the wind were quashed! Having hit a nice round number of 5km I decided to turn around and ride the wind (mostly) back. Again, hitting a reasonable speed, the inflatable didn’t let me down. The last challenge was a 400m section with a strong crosswind. Angling up into the wind to ensure I hit my target was difficult, but I think it would have been on any craft, nevertheless I ended a cool 10km on target having had a good adventure and a good exercise.

All notions of superiority laid to rest. The convenience of this SUP, the ease of assembly, the minutes deflate and pack away, it comes with a backpack which fits everything, and the weight isn’t so much that you wouldn’t hesitate in trekking a little to find a secluded spot for your own adventure.
