STARBOARD WEDGE LIMITED SERIES 10’2

Verdict

We were big fans of the Starboard Wedge when it first arrived, and the resilient Limited Series construction adds yet another dimension of practicality. Between waves, the 185L, 32” wide form gives fool-proof handling and a very high wave catching success rate. On a wave, you’re treated to true classic surf performance you’d expect from a board 20% smaller. This really is a board with two characters; both are a perfect match for many surfers across many conditions.

Overview

The Limited Series Wedge departs in looks, but not shape, from its Starlite and Blue Carbon pals. The black-on-white styling reminds one of a high-end performance shortboard. It looks fab. The deck-pad merges hexagons with smoother sections and a kick pad for positive sensory feedback on foot position.
Underneath, a well-proven single-to-double concave runs back to the two-plus-one fin cluster.
The rails are nicely downturned toward the rear, meeting at a round tail. The nose is pulled in but keeps plenty of forward volume for a high wave count.

Additional 7 oz glass on the rails, further glass wraps on the nose and tail, and biaxial glass layup on the deck reinforce the Wedge for those who like to surf with the hammer down.

Brand Claim

The all new Wedge line upgrades the previous range of Wide Point boards. These boards have a pro performance and feel without compromising stability or volume. All boards are 32’’ wide to provide oat and stability for heavier riders to rip. This is a versatile range for big to small conditions, best suited for beginner and intermediate riders.

Performance

We took delivery of the Wedge as a salvo of storms were preparing to hit Cornwall. Even in the most sheltered coves, conditions would be hellish. Could this big, ambitious board rise to the challenge?

First, paddling out. If you sum the volume (big enough to forgive anything, yet low enough to respond naturally), low water profile and template that fits between bumps, the Wedge could represent the apex of SUP board stability. If you can’t paddle out on this, it isn’t happening on any board. We’ll leave you to imagine for yourself the advantages of a SUP surf board that you won’t fall off of.

Next, wave affinity. Simply put, the Wedge is a surfer. Infallible stability does NOT come at the cost of performance. People used to smaller boards will find it responds and goes everywhere that a surfboard should. Those stepping down or crossing over from inflatables will feel astonished at the world of surf freedom now at their feet.

The Wedge has a beautiful, early roll-in to a wave, sits high and holds its line like a champ. Get your foot over the fins and you’ll surprise yourself with how many cutbacks and foam rebounds you can stick. Super board, we love it.
