Aztron Martian 2.0 14’0

Verdict

The Martian 2.0 is a sleek, accessible racer tuned for flat water that also shines ocean environments. At 27” wide it’s a practical choice for riders looking to jump into the race space, or anyone that wants a full-length lightweight, open-water capable board.

Overview

The Martian 2.0 carries a purposeful race outline with a continuous taper towards the nose. Towards the tail the rails remain a little more parallel before pulling in towards the square tail. Underneath, the side view reveals a deep cutting bow running towards a flat bottom before lifting towards the low-profile tail. On top, the nose carries a pronounced watershed that flows into a generous recessed standing area.

A neat cargo bungee sits at the forward end of the standing area, and a textured three-piece EVA deck pad extends from the tail to the cargo bungee. A soft race-style carry handle sits in the middle with another pair (one on each rail) for beach sprint starts.

These features suggest a strong deviation in intention and performance from the much-loved Martian 1.0.

Brand Claim

As its name suggests, MARTIAN embodies AZTRON’s imagination and ambition. In this new season, MARTIAN 2.0 has radically evolved to an authentic race SUP. The standard race size combined with the advanced CST Carbon Sandwich Tech enables unmatched tracking and superb speed. Let the boldly themed MARTIAN 2.0 unlock your racing spirit within!

Performance

We were huge fans of the original 12’6 Martian, our only lament was that the 30” width hid its true potential. So it was with great delight that we unsheathed the new 14’0 x 27” Martian 2.0. The same wonderful carbon sandwich construction is here, along with the deep cutting bow and low-profile square tail. But now these features are married with a reduced frontal cross-sectional area, race-style handles and a reimagined standing area.

At rest on the water, the Martian 2.0 feels reactive and connected to the surface. However, 27” is at the wider end for a race board these days, and with its recessed deck, the Martian 2.0 is automatically stable.

We paddled the Martian 2.0 on a series of open water sessions in mixed terrain. Underway, this board feels like it’s gliding on ice. It’s beautifully smooth and holds its line and momentum as it drives out through the surf. It maintains a steady pace when slogging around choppy, tidal headlands and builds up to a decent pace in smoother water. Cruising back in through surf is a real treat; the tail lift gets the nose right out of the water and the Martian 2.0 feels secure and responsive as you run down the line.

The Martian 2.0 is a practical, flat-water racer that will also eat up rough open-water and small surf. It’s a beautiful board at a realistic price, and we think a great solution for paddlers after a one-board quiver for club racing, touring, and small surf missions.
